Packing the house since 2000

This is the linchpin of "The Island" off Main, catering to every roots, rockabilly and country soul in town. Most any day of the week, one can walk in and plop down at the bar and unwind with the help of a cold Lone Star, great company, and some local music. If the Continental Club doesn't make your Texas heart jump just a little inside your chest, then you are doing something wrong. Also be sure to check out the Pachinko Hut out back when the weather is just right, manned by bartender Big E, who is also playing great B-movies in the background. -Houston Press

A down-home joint with good food & music

Natachee’s Supper ‘n Punch is Midtown’s favorite spot to grab some great home cooking. Our award-winning menu features breakfast all day, burgers, salads, chicken-fried steak and chicken, pork chops and more. It’s all made with the freshest ingredients right here in our own kitchen. Comfort food at it’s best. And don’t forget the little ones! We serve up their goodies in old-school lunchboxes.

The best record store in Houston

The only record store in the Midtown area, this store has a wide variety of products: music CDs and vinyl albums, designer clothing, books, artwork, toys, games, and all sorts of knickknacks. It is also a popular place to hang out before a show at the Continental Club.

Everyone's favorite coffee and cocktail lounge

Double Trouble offers a prime spot to get your caffeine fix — baristas serve locally-roasted Greenway coffee — or wind down at the end of the day, with specialty cocktails on the menu and micro brews on tap.The mod-meets-tiki decor makes for a casual but swanky feel, and between the poured-sand bar counter, retro sofas and covered patio overlooking the Main Street rail line, there is always plenty of seating. -Culture Map

Not your typical boutique

My Flaming Heart is an eclectic mix of custom fitted vintage-inspired clothing, unique handmade jewelry, and vintage cowboy boots. Unusual gifts from a collection of Texican and Mexican folk art, vintage trinkets and antique curiosities, and a mesmerizing selection of beads and charms.

Your local taco dealer

Open until 2 a.m. on weekends and located next to one of the city’s hottest music scenes, this hip little taco joint is a popular spot for Houston’s young Midtown crowd in search of a little spicy sustenance after hours of drinking and dancing. Satisfying breakfast tacos are served all day long, and quesadillas and the eight varieties of soft and crispy tacos (pollo guisado, barbacoa, and grilled fish are all tasty choices) make up the majority of the menu. -Culture Map

Big Kat's is a goldmine for old school indulgences, including the hot towel straight razor shave. For all of the topnotch service, the prices remain reasonable — that shave treatment is just a $10 foray, and haircuts ring in at $15. The three barbers ooze personality, as does the resident top hat-toting shoe shiner, Sir Charles. Another bonus: Big E & Co. are in the process of converting a 1949 refrigerator into a fully functioning kegerator, which will provide the men with libations during trims. For the young lads, the machine will also have root beer on tap. -Culture Map

"The route to the Place Upstairs is a little creepy in the dark. From the doorway on Main Street in Midtown, a tall and dimly lit stairwell leads up to a second floor space that sits above mid-Main businesses...like a curiosity shop that's been around for decades, the odds and ends at the Place Upstairs often defy categorization, and with interesting objects densely packed over every surface, it's possible to wander around the small two-room space for hours and never stop finding new goodies" -Houston Chronicle
